RETURN OF THE KING

World Scrabble Champion Brett Smitheram confirms his place in Qatar championship.

World Scrabble Champion and budding media sensation, Brett Smitheram has confirmed that he will be in Qatar later this year to defend his title at the 4th Mindsports World Championships. If he does so successfully, he will become only the second player ever to manage the feat, after legendary New Zealand Scrabbler, Nigel Richards. Indeed, Richards remains the only player thus far to win more than one world title, having last done so in 2013. Many people rate Richards the greatest player of all time, but Smitheram is the man who knocked him out of the previous two MSI World Championships (Lille 2016 and London 2014), so if anyone can do it, he can.

“I have a good shot, but Scrabble is a game of probabilities,” Brett told us. “I'll give myself the best chance of winning.

Originally from Cornwall, London- based Brett was declared winner in 2016 after a nail-biting three- round final against fellow Brit Mark Nyman.

Since becoming champion, Brett has proved to be an incredible ambassador for the mindsport, appearing across numerous media channels to spread the word about the game he loves. Taking the lead as the official spokesperson for MSA’s ‘Make Mind a Sport’ campaign, one thing is certain beyond doubt: Brett Smitheram has been a fantastic ambassador for the game of Scrabble, and a wonderful world champion.

Organised by Mindsports Academy (MSA) and Qatar Tourism Authority, the 4th Mindsports World Championships will be held between the 19th and 27th of August, and hosted at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC), a multi-purpose venue located in the capital city’s West Bay area. In addition to Scrabble, the nine-day tournament’s headline events include Go, Chess, Backgammon and e-Sports. The championship is expected to attract 1,500 mindsports enthusiasts from over 40 different countries. They will be vying for their mindsport championship title, which will come with their share of a record total of $200,000 in cash prizes.
