Plymouth College of Art sets the landscape and draws the way for Mind Sports

Mind Sports returns to imprint itself in the South West with the National Qualifiers drawing out the Country's finest

Plymouth, United Kingdom (18 June, 2014) - Mind Sports Academy, part of Mind Sports (International) Ltd, is pleased to announce that we will be challenging the UK’s most talented minds as contestants prepare to craft their path to success at a leading arts institution this summer. Plymouth College of Art’s contemporary venue will play host for the event, as Mind Sports returns to the South West as part of the national academy UK tour. The event will be held on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August 2014.

Mind Sports Academy returns home to its native Plymouth after success overseas to offer its fourth stop on the UK tour. Over the course of the year Mind Sports Academy events will visit twelve different cities and distribute over £40,000 in cash and prizes. Players of all ages and abilities are welcome to the event; you can play for free or buy in to cash prize tournaments and win a seat at our World Championships at London’s ExCel in November this year to earn the chance to win the £10,000 prize fund.

The event, open to any member of the public to both attend and take part, includes a wide variety of tournament play in Chess, Scrabble and Magic: The Gathering. Hearthstone® and Starcraft II® will also continue as part of the Mind Sports Academy tour, with experienced eSports tournament organisers Multiplay on hand to provide a high-quality gaming experience.

August provides one of the busiest months for the city with Mind Sports playing an influential part in the calendar. Visitors will have the opportunity to take part in taster sessions to enjoy alongside the city’s other festivities. These take place each day at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm for participants to learn more about the different mind sports or even ease you back into a game you may not have played in a long time.

Plymouth’s Mind Sports Academy event will also offer a world of discovery with ‘Coaching Tournaments’ for Chess where an experienced Chess trainer will be available between games in order to provide feedback to help players improve their strategy.

Additionally, players with an interest in digital gaming will have the opportunity to gain information about studying in this field as sponsors and venue hosts Plymouth College of Art offer a BA degree in Games Design. The three-year course is part of a host of opportunities available to study at the college where visitors to the Mind Sports Academy event will be able to discover more about the College’s offering.

The idea for the Mind Sports Academy came about thanks to the growing global demand for more organised mind sports events, with members of the public encouraged to make use of the academy’s facilities to build a community of like-minded players. The Academy events also complement our rapidly growing online community on, where members enjoy discounts at events, exclusive training videos and interactive games, as well as the opportunity to discuss these games on our online forum.

The first of its kind, the Mind Sports Academy offers individuals and groups an array of learning and training opportunities. An associated education programme introduces children to the importance of strategic thinking and improves cognitive skills.

Dave Brannan, CEO of the Mind Sports (International) brand believes there are a great deal of people that have been waiting for the creation of an Academy structure, “Mind Sports are just that, sports where player’s brains are doing the exercising and the Mind Sports Academy helps them improve and compete in their intellectual sport of choice.”

“We also hope to ignite interest from those who have previously not considered playing the likes of Chess, Scrabble and Magic: The Gathering as these mind sports not only have learning benefits, but they are seriously fun!”

The World Championships take place on 19th - 23rd November 2014.
